Here in the Midwest, people are starting to get pumped for festival season that runs into summer and early fall, including EDC Chicago (May 24th-26th), Summerfest (June 26th-30th, July 2nd-7th), Lollapalooza (August 2nd-3rd), and Northcoast (August 30th-September 1st) but this years Riotfest Carnival that takes place from September 13th-15th is one of the best line-ups I’ve seen yet besides this year’s Lollapalooza festival in Grant Park. Including an assortment of artists that vary from Fall Out Boy, Blink-182, and Taking Back Sunday - to Violent Femmes, Blondie, Stars, and Best Coast - this festival is expected to be one of the most anticipated events of the year including a third headliner to be revealed soon.

It would be five months
and nine days
until you kissed my leopard print skin.

I was porcelain and only kissed people I loved.
You were my first.
In dark we were light.
We slid between holes in jean pockets
and held our hearts beneath street lights.

We are fucking magnetic.
The axis in our stomachs kept us molded
and we clung to each other,
even when nothing was left.

In the morning we were silently electrifying.
The sunlight of seven a.m brought our bodies closer;
our limbs intertwined with one another and by eleven a.m.
I wanted you in my bed for as long as I could have you in it.
Two hundred and four miles
and I am sleeping in a bed made for two.

We bleed more often than others
but we are so fucking gifted.
Together I have watched you grow.
Even when you were not here
I held your pain in my palm.

Your mouth
scarred novels on my skin.

On Thursday, April 18th I had the pleasure of finally being able to catch a performance by spoken word poetry artist Andrea Gibson at The University of Chicago. Andrea is an award-winning poet and activist who’s pieces focus on war, class, gender, bullying, white privilege, sexuality, love, and spirituality. If you’re familiar with her work, which happens to make it’s way around Tumblr quite often, listening to her words come to life right before your eyes is a truly beautiful and moving experience.

In a small theatre that fits just around 100 people, the readings became much more intimate with every single person who filled a seat. I looked around the room as she spoke, and as people pressed their hands to their hearts and became honest with their feelings, Andrea was not gentle with her truths. She made an individual connection with each person in the room. As her readings went on, she told stories on where she grew up, her experiences with love, her life as a kindergarden teacher before she began to tour, her thoughts on the recent events that occurred in Boston, and was able to make herself completely vulnerable with the goodness she gave her audience. With her performance being scheduled as a 45 minute set, she went on for over an hour, giving us all of her heart that she could.

I highly recommend seeing Andrea at least once in your lifetime. She will inspire you in all ways and leave you feeling an admirable sensation of nirvana for days.

The Crystals - Then He Kissed Me

You may recognize this 1963 legendary girl-group tune from Martin Scorsese’s monumental film, “Goodfellas” - or maybe you caught it as the opening number in the 1987 release of “Adventures In Babysitting” where you see actress Elisabeth Shue dance throughout her room; openly acknowledging her young puppy-love for her boyfriend, lip-syncing every word as she confesses the lyrics.

This song is incredibly easy to love, and let’s face it, puts you in possibly the most uplifting mood ever. Since I was a pre-teen watching Adventures In Babysitting just to see the opening number, to this exact day, I remember playing it out in my head what it would be like to kiss someone - to love someone. When I was younger, this song enlightened my views on what love may be like one day (which obviously, isn’t necessarily like this) but in all honesty, sometimes it is. This song basically sums up the beginning stages of what it feels like to find interest in someone, having it be reciprocated, and it being possibly the best thing that ever happened to you in your life. (At the time) It’s fun, it’s quirky, and it’s my younger me’s adolescent jam. I know you love it too.

I made this video with the intent of it somehow reaching the individuals at CNN and shining a bit of light on the concept of rape and how the media and society adversely affects it. I have listen the twitter accounts of all three CNN correspondents as well as the Change.org petition.

In 2011 I had the privilege of interviewing an inspiring and growing fashion designer Jac Vanek. You may know her for her highly demanded black elastic bracelets like, Ruthless, Legit, Stay Gold, Creeper, Gleek and many more but truth is, Ms. Vanek has made quite the name for herself in these past three years as she’s released some of the most exclusive lines for young adults to date. When I asked Vanek what she had to say to people who are focusing around doing the same thing she replied with my favorite answer of all time: “Words are everything to me and it speaks more than anything in the entire world. And it’s good because I get to translate a lot of that into my designs but I still get to have a lot of it just kind of kept in my little secret heart, because I’m too scared to you know, let go just yet. So I don’t know, for anybody who is doing anything, regardless of what it is, whether it be an artistic thing or if you’re starting a business, my one word of advice is to believe in yourself, no matter how cheesy that sounds because there are always going to be people who always talk crap and there’s always going to be people who are going to try to take you down but that’s life. And honestly, it’s going to happen regardless what the hell you’re doing, no matter who it is. You have to have a tough skin and you have to really believe in what you’re doing or else you’re not going to make it through all those obstacles.”

In just one year of interviewing Vanek, not only did her success grow immensely, but her line as a whole grew to an incredible level of honesty and edginess. Jewelry, hats, scarfs, tote bags, buttons, vintage flannel shirts, tons of more t-shirts and even jackets had made it to the “shop” section of her website, and in the summer of 2012, they were up for sale on every stop of the Vans Warped Tour. When I met up with her for a second interview this past summer, I asked if she had took her line more seriously now vs when she first released the Ruthless bracelet, “It’s definitely grown a lot. And since I’ve been more successful with certain things, I’ve been able to experiment more and do more of what I actually want to do and I feel like I’ve grown a lot so, I feel like I’m being more true to myself. This line that I just put out is the first line that I would honestly wear everything whereas before I was kind of working within a certain realm that I could. So I’m very happy with how things are going and I love everything I’ve put out.”

Vanek goes on to talk about how happy and overwhelmed she was to have her designs recognized in Jeffrey Campbells inspiration/style column and how fast her “I HATE EVERYONE” one-of-a-kind army jacket hit Tumblr, becoming completely viral when a friend had posted it on a blog before she even could release it. Jac Vanek is a growing visionary - she see’s things, she knows what young people like, and she knows what she likes, and with that she is able to be create and distribute her line with dignity and honesty for her following and for herself - staying true and also being extremely grateful for all that her line resonates with.

And her last piece of advice for someone who is looking to start something and to build themselves in their work: “For anybody who wants to start something, do it with your entire heart, full force - start small, there’s no need to try and do something huge and put a lot of money into it because I started with one bracelet and I grew from then. I never got in over my head with things, and I think that’s really important because then you don’t end up just eating shit if you have a little setback.”
